Gov: domestic partners ‘not same sex marriage’

As the 800+ page domestic partner bill continues to be debated in the Senate, Governor Richardson is talking about the bill and its chances.  “Its not same-sex marriage, its totally different,’ Richardson said, ”my view is that the full Senate should vote on it”.

Senate bill 183 was delayed on Wednesday in the Senate Judiciary Committee. If it makes it through there it then must clear another committee. With two weeks left in the session days become precious to try an pass bills.  “I don’t think its dead, or on life support,” says Richardson, “it’s had a set back.” In the 2009 session the bill failed to move out of Senate Judiciary on its first try and back then Richardson told reporters not to take their eye off it. The bill was then passed out and sent to the Senate floor where it was defeated.

The Governor feels a similar fight this year would be closer.  “I was disappointed it was referred to the Finance Committee,” the Governor told reporters but when talking about how the bill would fair in a full Senate hearing he said its “going to be a close vote and going to be a bit uphill.”
