The sign posted on the door of the Senate Finance Committee room is clear: no domestic partnerships hearing until the budget is done. “This session is about fiscal appropriations,” Senator and Finance Committee Chairman John Arthur Smith, D-Deming, said succinctly.
Sen. Smith said he hopes to start in on House Bill 2, the appropriations bill, on Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest. Then he says HB 2 should be out of Senate Finance by the latter part of the week. Once that is done, Sen. Smith said, the domestic partnership bill (SB 183) will not be first on the agenda.
