Lt. Governor Diane Denish and Las Cruces District Attorney Susana Martinez were both in Santa Fe today to file necessary paperwork for their gubernatorial campaigns when we caught up with them.

“Its 266 days until the general election and I’m very excited to travel around New Mexico,” said Denish.

As the only Democrat on the primary ballot she will be able to concentrate on the general election and the eventual winner of a five-person Republican race.

“Jobs and the economy. People want 21st century jobs and we want a 21st century workforce and that’s our focus,” said Denish, adding that there’s ‘a new way in Santa Fe’.

When asked if a “new way” means New Mexico needs changes after the last seven years Denish replied, “I’m looking forward, this is not a time to look backwards, about the hope for the the future, the optimism of the future.”

For Martinez, the past is very much a part of the present.

“Its unfortunate that we’re even talking about tax increases. We should’ve been more careful years ago,” she said.

Martinez has garnered a number of endorsements among fellow Republicans, but she says the biggest challenge facing her party in the race is that there five of them. Martinez has been on the campaign trail for seven months and a looks to keep it up “We’re going to continue to do that (campaigning) letting people know there are clear differences in the primary.”
