State Senator Dianna Duran, R-Tularosa, announced Tuesday that she will be running for the office of Secretary of State. Duran turned in more than 2,000 signed petitions today when officially filing for the race. The senator is a former Otero County Clerk.

“Everywhere I go people throughout New Mexico are demanding reform in our election process,” Duran said in a statement. “They want their votes to count and they want Voter ID. I am ready to lead the movement for election reform.”

Yesterday, Secretary of State Mary Hererra, a Democrat, said that her office did not have enough money for the elections this year.

“I’m screaming,” Herrera told the Independent, “because they need to know to fund New Mexico elections.”

In announcing her candidacy, Duran said that she was recruited for the race just ten days ago, but gathered more than twice the 1,062 signatures required.
