Johnson: GOP prez candidates ‘all sound alike’

By | 02.09.10 | 5:59 pm

In an interview with ABC News, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, a libertarian Republican, took some clear shots at potential 2012 Republican Presidential candidates, saying “All the other candidates– all the other suspects … if you put a piece of cardboard over their caricature and did some voiceover on what it is they were saying, they would all sound alike.”

Johnson is widely believed to be planning a run for president, but has not yet announced his candidacy. He is busily raising funds through his 501(c)4 political advocacy organization, the Our America Initiative–which can be used to spread his message, but not for an official campaign.

While some supporters of former presidential candidate and current U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, have gravitated toward supporting Johnson, ABC News notes that the former New Mexico governor differs on some issues from the money-bombing pioneer.

While Paul believes life begins at conception, Johnson thinks pre-viability abortion decisions are best left to the individuals involved. While Paul is an amnesty foe, Johnson thinks that illegal immigrants should be allowed to pay taxes and help shoulder the social costs of their presence in the United States. And when it comes to monetary policy, Johnson is calling for the Federal Reserve Bank to be scrutinized and audited. He is not, however, joining Paul in calling for it to be abolished.

If nothing else, it would be an unusual circumstance for New Mexico to have two governors run for President in successive elections.
