Bill aims to stop long MVD waits

New Mexicans may soon be able to renew their drivers licenses without having to stand in line. House bill 25 passed on Friday by a vote of 58-0. The bill now has less than a week to make it through the Senate.

Those looking to renew their license would be able to do so over the phone or “by other electronic means.”

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Nate Cote, D-Las Cruces who says:

“This is one step in the direction of making the Motor Vehicle Department more
efficient and customer friendly. This legislation should be an example to other state departments to look at similar efficiencies that could improve their programs. This bill is an effective effort in cutting costs to taxpayers.”

The vision and tests and photos taken for licenses could happen every 16 years.
