Sen. Clint Harden‘s so-called “ban the box” bill, SB 254, which removes the question of felony criminal conviction from job applications, passed a Senate floor vote Friday by a vote of 35-4.
The bill does not prohibit employers from asking a candidate about conviction, it simply delays the question from coming up until an applicant has been offered a face-to-face interview.
Sen. Harden said “criminal conviction is one of the biggest roadblocks to people gaining employment.” The bill would allow candidates to be considered for employment on the basis of qualifications first. It does not prohibit employers from turning down a candidate because of criminal conviction.
The bill was heard on the floor with no debate.
