Speaker Ben Lujan, D-Santa Fe, said the House should vote Tuesday on whether to accept substantial changes to the state budget made by the Senate on Saturday. If the House agrees with the changes, that means the state budget goes to Gov. Bill Richardson for his signature–but that’s unlikely because there are huge differences between the two budgets.
If the House disagrees with the changes, the next step would be the all-important conference committee, where each chamber picks a few members to negotiate a solution.
Lujan told the Independent Monday afternoon there should be 10 members on the conference committee, with five coming from each chamber. However, Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen said the Senate will only have three members on the committee and one participant will be Sen. John Arthur Smith, D-Deming. Speaker Lujan will play a large role in determining who will be on the committee from the House. He said two likely candidates are Rep. Henry “Kiki” Saavedra, D-Albuquerque and Rep. Luciano “Lucky” Varela, D-Santa Fe.
