Tom Jensen, at the Public Policy Polling blog, theorizes that Sen. Tom Udall might be protected from the negative favorability ratings that some of his freshman Democratic colleagues have suffered from because he previously held statewide office. Udall, before becoming a Congressman in the 3rd Congressional District, served two terms as state Attorney General.
Udall’s has a “solid 48/36 approval spread” which is in line with Freshman Democratic Senators Mark Warner and Jeanne Shaheen — not like other freshman Democratic Senators Kay Hagan, Jeff Merkley, Mark Begich, and Mark Udall (Tom’s cousin) who have negative approval spreads.
Both Warner and Shaheen served as governors of their respective states (Virginia and New Hampshire) before becoming U.S. Senators.
All of the Senators named replaced Republican Senators; Tom Udall replaced Sen. Pete Domenici after Domenici retired.
Tom and Mark Udall where the only two of the group to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming Senators; both served for 10 years.
Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., New Mexico’s senior Senator, also served as state Attorney General before becoming Senator and had an identical 48/36 approval spread as Tom Udall in the PPP poll. However, unlike Udall, Bingaman has been in office since 1983.
