Legislature finalizes 2011 budget

It took a 30-day regular session and almost three days of a special session to hammer it out, but New Mexico finally has its budget for the 2011 fiscal year. After debating the measure for about two hours Wednesday night, the Senate passed House Bill 2 by a party line vote of 26-14. It is now on its way to the governor.

“This is something everyone can live with. It’s going to be hard, but its a good start. Let’s get this thing out of here and go home,” Senate President Pro Tem Timothy Jennings, D-Roswell, said.

Republicans brought numerous amendments to the bill, many of which garnered sympathy from some Democrats, but to amend the bill would’ve extended the work lawmakers would have to do to pass a budget, and there was no appetite for that.

“What a lot of this is like is like kissing your sister, it might look good but it doesnt feel good,” said Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales. The big question mark for many in the Senate is economic growth; the bill plans the budget based on 6 percent growth, many feel that’s an overly optimistic number. And some Senators openly talked about the possibility of another special session.
