With health care reform wrapping up — the House will most likely finish the effort tonight– the question becomes what will Congress tackle next. Two popular choices among Congress watchers are financial reform and climate legislation. Senator Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., is urging quick action on energy legislation.
The New York Times reports:
Bingaman said he advocated for the Senate to move as quickly as possible to get energy legislation (S. 146) approved in his committee last summer, which includes a renewable energy standard and offshore oil drilling. Bingaman said he is open to adding the climate provisions crafted by the Kerry-led trio if they have the votes.
“I’d like to have the Senate do what it can do,” Bingaman said.
The “Kerry-led trio” is John Kerry, D-Mass., Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. The three have been working on a comprehensive energy bill, attempting to find a coalition of 60 votes in the Senate on the climate legislation
The environmental Web site Grist highlighted the difference in opinions between Bingaman and the Kerry coalition last week: “We’ll see whether Kerry can do for [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid and Bingaman what [Speaker of the House Nancy] Pelosi did for [President Barack] Obama and Reid on health care reform — stiffen their resolve and keep their sights set high.”
