And do you think the Barack Obama campaign is going after young voters? If you need proof, check out the Xbox live games of college students.
Those ripe, enthusiastic voters Obama would like casting a vote for him in a few weeks are seeing Obama political ads popping up in some of Xbox’s most popular games. No lie. This is so cool.
There’s an “Obama for President” billboard in the Xbox 360 racing game Burnout Paradise. The game’s publisher confirmed Tuesday that official advertisements placed by Obama’s campaign team have begun. Others appear in the NBA Live and NHL Live games as well, according to the gamer site Americablog.com. Check out the comments from people about this campaign strategy.
“I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout,” said Holly Rockwood, director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts (EA for short), the game’s publisher.
Rockwood told Americablog that EA allows ad placements in their online games. “Like most television, radio and print outlets, we accept advertising from credible political candidates,” she said. “Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams.”
I like what writer Wagner James of the techy site Gigaom had to say about Obama’s ads and about people who will criticize the candidate for such tactics. He said:
Of course, detractors could accuse Sen. Obama of sending out mixed messages; earlier this year he was telling audiences that parents need to “turn off the television set, and put the video games away.” Then again, since the Burnout billboard specifically advises gamers to vote early, maybe it’s his subtle way of trying to get them off the couch.
