Trujillo responds to SOS allegations in KUNM interview

By | 03.31.10 | 4:21 pm

Deputy Secretary of State Francisco Trujillo sat down with KUNM reporter Jim Williams for an hour-long interview this week to respond to accusations currently buffeting the state agency.

The agency has been portrayed in a bad light in the public arena ever since former State Elections Director A.J. Salazar resigned, but not before alleging in a letter that the office headed by Secretary of State Mary Herrera is mismanaged, and possibly worse.

As KUNM notes, Trujillo, now the State Election Director in addition to performing duties as deputy secretary, “addresses Salazar’s allegations, as well as questions about his qualifications for the Elections Director position.”

Trujillo also says “Herrera ‘may have’, in a meeting, asked employees to gather petition signatures for her. He maintains that neither this nor the request for sponsorships is illegal or unacceptable. He also says that high turnover within the Secretary of State’s office is probably not unusual,” the news station reports.
