Starting on Monday, commuters and other riders will be able to connect to wireless internet, or Wi-Fi, while riding the Rail Runner.
A group of 50 volunteers had been testing the Wi-Fi for the past several months and the next 90-days will be another test phase, this time open to all travelers in the trains or in the train stations.
“The Rail Runner has provided convenience and ease for commuters over the last three years and with this new wireless system, we are now providing an additional benefit to passengers,” said state transportation secretary Gary L.J. Girón in a statement.
Dewey Cave, Interim Executive Director for the Mid-Region Council of Governments said in a statement, “This period will give riders ample opportunity to check out what kind of capabilities the Rail Runner offers in terms of a free Wi-Fi service.”
The press release says that riders “should be able to send emails, surf the internet and move from station to train, and train car to train car without losing connectivity.”
Rail Runner commuters have been promised Wi-Fi before, with a previous date of mid-2009 mentioned. Wireless internet was promised when the train first completed its voyage to Santa Fe.
The Rail Runner currently runs from Belen to Santa Fe along I-25.
