Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez won straw poll of attendees at a Republican Party of Otero County gubernatorial forum Thursday night. Two candidates, former state Republican Party chairman Allen Weh and attorney Pete Domenici Jr., did not attend the forum.
Martinez won the straw poll with 71 percent of the votes, while Doug Turner received 23 percent and Janice Arnold-Jones received 6 percent. Weh and Domenici Jr. both received no votes.
Though the total amount of attendees, or those polled, was not available, Arnold-Jones tweeted that there were “over 100 in attendance.”
“I deeply appreciate the strong support of Otero County Republicans and look forward to continuing to carry my message of reform and accountability throughout New Mexico,” Martinez said in a press release announcing her straw poll victory.
Martinez also referenced of the killing of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz.
“I believe my background, which includes deep executive experience, taking on corruption and prosecuting illegal immigrants who commit crimes prepares me to lead,” Martinez said in her statement.
A straw poll is a non-scientific, non-binding poll, usually of those active in party politics. The most famous straw poll is, perhaps, the Ames Straw Poll which takes place in Ames, Iowa, the August before a contested Republican presidential primary.
Straw polls are generally seen as a test of organizational strength for candidates.
The primaries will be held on June 1.
