An anti-government group sent a letter to Governor Bill Richardson urging him to leave office or be forced out, according to the FBI’s office in Albuquerque. Governors of both political parties across the nation have received the letters.
The group that sent the letters is called Guardians of the Free Republics. The letter says if the governors do not leave office within three days, they will be removed.
According to the Associated Press, “The FBI is warning police across the country that an anti-government group’s call to remove governors from office could provoke violence.”
The AP reports:
The group called the Guardians of the free Republics wants to “restore America” by peacefully dismantling parts of the government, according to its Web site.
Investigators do not see threats of violence in the group’s message, but fear the broad call for removing top state officials could lead others to act out violently.
“We are aware of the letters sent to the governors and I can confirm we did receive such a letter in New Mexico,” Darrin Jones, supervisory special agent in the FBI’s office in Albuquerque, said in a statement according to the Albuquerque Journal. “However, there does not appear to be any specific or credible threat associated with the letters. We are working with our state and local partners and will continue to assess the matter.”
The AP reports that the FBI expects all 50 governors will eventually receive the letters.
In December, 2008, the office of Governor Bill Richardson and Lt. Gov. Diane Denish were evactuated after a mysterious white powder was delivered in an envelope. Richard Leon Goyette was arrested for sending the powder to offices around the world.
