Former Gov. Johnson to appear on Colbert Report

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson will appear on the Colbert Report on May 10. The appearance, which Johnson announced on Facebook, is part of a media blitz that many believe is a prelude to a presidential run in 2012.

“If you have never seen the Colbert Report, I’d get ready to watch a very interesting discussion,” Johnson said on Facebook. “Speaking with Stephen Colbert will be nothing short of an exciting time!”

Some politicians have found that appearing on the comedy program hasn’t been a good move for their image. In 2007, then-Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., warned Democrats to stay away from the program. Emanuel, now President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, was the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, a group tasked with electing and re-electing Democrats to Congress.

“He said don’t do it … it’s a risk and it’s probably safer not to do it,” said Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., told The Hill. Cohen ignored the advice and appeared on the show anyway.
