PRC Commissioner guilty of felony battery, burglary charges

By | 04.08.10 | 6:05 pm

A State District Court today found PRC commissioner Carol Sloan guilty of two felonies—aggravated battery and aggravated burglary. The Associated Press reports that Sloan will appeal the conviction. Meanwhile, state Democrats and Republicans are calling on Sloan, a Democrat, to resign.

Sloan was convicted of striking Brenda Yazzie with a rock because she believed Yazzie was having an affair with Sloan’s husband.

Sloan admitted in court to calling Yazzie a “toothless old whore” but denied striking Yazzie with a rock.

The Journal reports that Sloan faces 12 years in jail.

Calls for resignation from both political parties

After the conviction, both major political parties in New Mexico called for Sloan to resign.

“Commissioner Sloan received her day in court and was convicted of two felonies,” Republican Party Chairman Harvey Yates Jr. said in a statement after Sloan’s conviction. “Out of respect for the office she holds and the constituents she was elected to serve, Carol Sloan should resign immediately.”

Sloan, a Democrat, is not getting the backing of her party after her conviction.

“I have called for Ms. Sloan’s immediate resignation from the PRC,” Democratic Party of New Mexico chairman Javier Gonzales said in a statement. “Ms. Sloan’s actions are appalling, unacceptable and will not be tolerated by Democrats or anyone else in New Mexico.”
