Mora County undersheriff fired via text message?

A Mora County undersheriff says that he was fired by Sheriff Roy Cordova via text message — and for purely political reasons.

Mora County  indicated in the text message exchange indicate that he was firing Tim Marquez because Marquez is challenging Cordova in November’s elections.

Cordova asked Marquez when he was going to drop his bid and later texted this to Marquez:

2 bad it got this far n ur a democrat n u forced me 2 ask 4 ur resignation by 5 clock n good luck n god bless…

Both Cordova and Marquez are Democrats that will be facing each other in the June primary.

Marquez texted back that Cordova would have to fire him and for a good reason — but Cordova said that Marquez is an at-will employee and he did not need to have a reason to fire him.

“Well do it,” Marquez texted Cordova.

Cordova responded, “I already did.”

If that was not enough, the next day Cordova sent Marquez a letter saying that Marquez did not show up to work and did not call in to work — and that if it happened again, that Marquez would be disciplined.
