Rothenberg looks at possible GOP revival in NM

The 2008 elections featured the best results that Democrats in New Mexico could have hoped for — for the first time in the state’s history, all five federal seats are held by Democrats. But national political analyst Stuart Rothenberg sees a possible Republican revival in New Mexico.

“Republicans seem almost certain to win back at least one of the state’s congressional districts, the 2nd, and now appear to have a least a fighting chance to take back the 1st district,” Rothenberg wrote for CQ Politics.

While Rothenberg thinks that Republican challenger Jon Barela has a chance at retaking the seat for Republicans, incumbent Martin Heinrich, a Democrat, “still has to be regarded as the favorite in his bid for re-election.”

After speaking with Jon Barela in Washington D.C., Rothenberg moved the district to “Leans Democratic” from “Democrat favored.”
