Richardson urges AZ guv to veto immigration bill

Governor Bill Richardson told Arizona governor Jan Brewer that he believes she should veto a bill that some say will lead to racial profiling.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos confirmed to the Associated Press that Richardson called Brewer.

The bill would allow police to question the immigration status of anyone officials think might be in the country illegally. This leads some to say it will lead to racial profiling while others say it is a necessary tool to prevent illegal immigration.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is in favor of the bill; McCain previously attempted to craft an immigration reform bill in the Senate.

“The state of Arizona is acting and doing what it feels it needs to do in light of the fact that the federal government is not fulfilling its fundamental responsibility — to secure our borders,” McCain said in an interview with Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly on Monday.

McCain is currently facing a primary in the form of J.D. Hayworth, a conservative radio host and former U.S. Representative.

U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., says if the bill passes people should boycott the state.

“We’re codifying into law, if the governor signs this, racial profiling, discrimination under the Constitution,” Grijalva said on MSNBC on Monday night. Grijalva is the 1st Vice Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
