Drinking water at Cannon Air Force Base has become contaminated with high levels of the bacteria E. coli, possibly from sewage, prompting a “boil water” advisory from the state Environment Department Wednesday.
Water consumers on base were advised to boil water for five minutes before drinking, cooking, washing dishes or bathing with it.
Other water systems in the area were not affected, Environment Department officials said.
“The presence of E. coli in water indicates that the water may have been in contact with sewage or animal wastes, and could contain disease-causing organisms,” a Department advisory states.
While most strains of E. coli are harmless, and some strains normally live in the human gut without causing disease, other strains can cause severe illness, the advisory states.
The air base’s water was being disinfected Wednesday, the advisory states.
The state has “required” the air base to notify consumers of the finding, the advisory states. The base web page prominently announced the problem Wednesday evening.
