Lt. Gov., and gubernatorial candidate, Diane Denish denounced the recently-signed Arizona immigration law, calling it “racial profiling” and says that it goes “too far.” The law would allow police officers to ask anyone about their immigration status as long as the office has a “reasonable suspicion” that they may be in the country illegally.
“Here in New Mexico, we value our diversity. It’s ingrained in our culture and it strengthens us as a people,” Denish said in a statement. “While I do believe we must secure our borders and pass a comprehensive national immigration reform bill, we cannot give government a free pass to racially profile and infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens.
Gov. Bill Richardson had urged Arizona governor Jan Brewer to veto the controversial law, but Brewer instead signed the bill into law Friday.
“We’re better than that here in New Mexico,” Denish said.
The Independent has asked each of the five Republican gubernatorial candidates their position on the new Arizona law and whether or not they would support such a law in New Mexico and will report on their answers.
