Sloan returns to PRC duties today

Public Regulation Commission member Carol K. Sloan will return to work Tuesday to attend the regular Commission meeting, Sloan’s executive assistant Luis Ledezma told The Independent.

Sloan was convicted in state District Court April 8 of felony aggravated battery and felony aggravated burglary, following her attack on Brenda Yazzie with a rock. Sloan reportedly believed Yazzie was having an affair with Sloan’s husband.

She will not be speaking with reporters “for the time being,” Ledezma said.

Sloan is appealing her conviction, and will be allowed to keep her seat on the Commission through that process.

However, Sloan, a Democrat, cannot run for reelection this year because of the felony conviction. Lt. Gov. Diane Denish and others have called for Sloan’s resignation.

Executive Director of New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness Hank Hughes, a Democrat, has announced he will run for Sloan’s District 4 PRC seat. Hughes intends to run on a “green energy” platform.

After a contentious Insurance Division hearing Monday, Hughes told The Independent he would work with Commissioner Jason Marks to improve Division transparency, if elected.
