Heinrich/Barela race more competitive, analyst says

The 1st Congressional District race between Martin Heinrich and Jon Barela “leans Democratic” according to the Cook Political Report (subscription required) — an increase in competitiveness from the earlier “likely Democratic” status.

According to the Cook Political Report, “GOP businessman Jon Barela is his party’s ideal candidate against Heinrich.”

This is something that Heinrich has heard before. In his 2008 electoral bid, many considered then-Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White, now the Chief Public Safety Officer for the city of Albuquerque, as the Republican Party’s best-possible candidate for Republicans to retain the 1st Congressional District seat.

But Barela is being touted as his party’s best hope because of his “crossover appeal” and because he is Hispanic. Also, 2010 could very well end up being a “wave election” for the Republicans, sweeping some candidates into office based on the national mood, just as 2006 and 2008 were for Democrats.
