Rail Runner WiFi doesn’t work for everyone

By | 05.05.10 | 11:00 am

I boarded the Rail Runner today happy in the knowledge that I’d get work done traveling to Santa Fe. The new wireless system is advertised on the train’s website and NMI has written about the state Department of Transportation testing the system over the next two months.

Well, guess what, folks. The wireless didn’t work this morning, at least for me. I don’t know if it was just me who encountered trouble connecting to the Internet or if other passengers experienced the same frustration. (Probably not, because, unlike me, they likely didn’t take a gamble on the wireless working and had their air cards with them.)

An employee reset the signal but that didn’t help. The lesson here, as the employee reminded me, is that the transportation department is testing wireless on the train. So if you’re looking to get work done online, don’t expect the wireless to work. Bring your air card, if you have one. That way, if the wireless is working, you can be pleasantly surprised.
