County party chair quits to support Mullins, Martinez

The chairman of the San Juan County Republican Party has resigned from his position to support 3rd Congressional candidate Tom Mullins and gubernatorial candidate Susana Martinez. County chairs are not allowed to support candidates facing primary competition.

In his resignation letter, Rod Montoya mentioned polarizing 3rd Congressional Republican candidate Adam Kokesh as an impetus for leaving his position in the county party.

“I am unable to stand by any longer as Adam Kokesh, candidate for Congress in the 3rd Congressional District, continues to mislead Republican voters,” Montoya said in a resignation letter provided to the Farmington Daily-Times.

Montoya pointed at Kokesh’s opposition to the Iraq war.

Kokesh told the Daily-Times it was an example of the “establishment” not supporting his campaign.

The primaries happen less than a month away, on June 1.
