Internal poll shows Heinrich above 50 percent in re-election bid

According to a poll by a Democratic polling firm, Rep. Martin Heinrich is in a good position for re-election, leading his Republican opponent 55 percent to 38 percent.

The poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, reported by Joe Monahan, was conducted from April 28 – May 2.

The poll shows that Heinrich leads Barela among both Anglos (48 percent to 44 percent) and Hispanics (68 percent to 24 percent).

“Heinrich’s support is especially broad; he leads Barela among both men and women, younger and older voters, and in neighborhoods across the district,” the polling memo reads.

The poll of of 500 likely general election voters in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District has a margin of error of +/- 4.4 percent. And, as with all internal polls, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Internal polls are not necessarily inaccurate but there is no incentive for campaigns to publicly release polls that feature bad or disappointing news for the candidate.

A poll by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic polling firm, in February showed Heinirich leading Barela 45 percent to 36 percent.
