The National Republican Campaign Committee, the official Republican Party group dedicated to electing Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives, announced Thursday that Jon Barela has graduated to “Young Gun” status in a program to elect new Republican officials.
The “Young Gun” status is the highest level in the NRCC program which gives fundraising and infrastructure support to candidates in districts held by Democrats.
“I’m as energized as ever and ready to take back the First Congressional District for New Mexico’s working families,” Barela said. Barela also accused Rep. Martin Heinrich of having a loyalty “to his party bosses and far-left special interests are stronger than his loyalties to New Mexico’s families.”
“Jon Barela has proven that he is ready to put this seat back in the Republican column,” NRCC Chairman Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said in a statement.
An internal campaign poll by Heinrich’s campaign shows that he has a large lead over Barela.
Barela has no primary competition and will face Heinrich in November’s general election. Heinrich won New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District seat in 2008 over then-Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White.
