Sorry Jim, but you have developed an acrid personality over the years that is reflected in your turning against people who once worked with, and even supported, you. I worked with you here in NM in the Sierra Club, among other things, and I am sad to see how you have come to attack people instead of working with them. Working together, rather than attack and dividing people, is what the environmental movement is all about.

Jim, I am not signing this post because, frankly, I don't want to be on your enemies list.

In a contest between Heinrich and White ..... Heinrich has my vote hands down. In a contest between facts and emotional bombast, progressives want facts. Unfortunately, this story is heavy on the emotional bombast.

Sandoval and Baca have been respected voices in the progressive community for many years ---- and so their attack dog style is truly disappointing.

If Scarantino's allegations re. Heinrich's lobbying activities are without merit, present the facts to refute them. But this old-style character assassination is not helpful.

I don't have a problem with David's story. Everybody's entitled to their opinion, and these folks have theirs. It comes with the territory. I will point out that while they cast aspersions on my credibility, they don't cite one factual statement made by me they claim was inaccurate. Nor have they offered any documentation to substantiate their assaults on my character. I don't know how Jim Baca can opine on my state of mind. We haven't spoken in at least five years. Arturo Sandoval and I haven't shared a word between us in at least four years.

A few other comments on points I wasn't asked about in my interview:
--Messrs. Baca and Sandoval do not offer anything to cure or explain away the omissions and misrepresentations in the records Heinrich presented to the media. How do they explain Heinrich forgetting to mention a lunch with a US Senator?
--Iif as Mr. Sandoval claims Heinrich wasn't keeping time sheets, then how did he compile the time records he presented to the media? Did he just make them up four and five years after the fact, and conveniently leave off being paid to take members of Congress on field trips? I think Heinrich also omitted from those records the fact he was paid to testify before a Senate subcommittee in Feb. 2003.
--Further, as to Mr. Sandoval's assertion that it was my obligation to ensure that Mr. Heinrich complied with federal and state laws, he overlooks the fact that Heinrich was the one who held himself out to us as a professional lobbyist. He was an independent contractor, not an employee. It was his responsibility to comply with all applicable ethical rules and laws. When you hire a lawyer, for instance, you assume they've joined the bar. When you hire a lobbyist, you assume they will comply with the law. At least so you hope.

My only minor issue with this story is the headline. I must say I don't think I deserve the title of Heinrich's "nemesis." As I recall, his opponent in the race is Darren White, not me.

Last, thank-you wraesteve for the compliments.

wraesteve: First, I'm glad to hear you're a new reader to NMI. Second,I'd refer you back to the "related posts" cited above to fill you in on recent developments on how the larger story had developed over the past month. There you'll find both quotes from Jim and also comments he's posted. This particular story is just the latest chaptr in that narrative.

After you do that, if you still feel the same way, fair enough, just keep commenting - pro or con - on any NMI story whenever inspiration strikes.
