Is the training for soldiers equivalent to teachers in our society? Of course not. Does it, in many cases, surpass it? Absolutely. The not so subtle insinuation that all soldiers are 19 year-old jarheads who only want to kill, kill, kill turns my stomach a little. Sure, in an organization as large as the military, there are members with little training, but the vast majority of roles demand highly skilled people and many hours of training. I've spent lots of time in Albuquerque classrooms and I know more veterans than most people and Troops to Teachers - for the right applicant - is a brilliant option to harness some of this country's best talent.

I waited for this topic to appear on the national horizon...I haven't heard anything!

The 'Troops to Teachers' propsal made me shudder. Can we really just provide jobs for war veterans based on some 'welfare' type vision of the 'payback' for service?

Is this the basic issue in our education delima? Obviously, many of our national leaders don't value education. Many families don't value education. To think that ANYONE CAN TEACH is not only insulting to those of us that devote our lives to opening students' minds...It creates an environment of failure for our school systems on the whole.

I encourage all of you to check into the policy that has been propossed. I have spent most of my life pursuing my education, certifications, licensures, and never ending preparation for my craft. I was personally insulted by the condecending tone Mcain used in the last debate referrencing the training and licensure teachers should have. Isn't this part of the 'No (All) Children Left Behind' dogma?

Is the training for 'soldiers' equivalent to 'teachers' in our society?

Barbara, you did not do YOUR homework. On the Troops to Teacher web page is an "Eligibility" link which opens a pdf file explaining academic requirements for eligibility. I believe it says something about a Baccalaureate or advanced degree for teaching academics...no extra credit for you!
