State Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas, D-Albuquerque, outlined a plan for the state of New Mexico to join Los Angeles and other municipalities in a boycott of Arizona over the controversial new immigration law and the banning of ethnic studies classes from state schools.
Maestas said after Arizona banned ethnic studies that it was clear that the law wasn’t about illegal immigration.
“It’s not about illegal immigrants – it’s about Mexicans, whether they are legal or illegal,” Maestas told Clearly New Mexico. “It’s about people from Mexico who are brown and speak with an accent.”
Here is the plan, according to Clearly New Mexico:
- New Mexico should ban official state travel to Arizona
- New Mexico should not enter into any new contracts with Arizona
- New Mexico should move to divest all existing investments with Arizona
- New Mexico’s Tourism Department should run nationally-placed ads that say, “Come to New Mexico – we’re not Arizona”
- New Mexico’s Secretary of Economic Development should aggressively compete for companies currently looking to locate in Arizona
- New Mexico should bar any high school teams from playing in Arizona
- The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s basketball team should scuttle plans to play Arizona State University in Arizona
