The U.S. must do more to help fund law enforcement efforts on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border, New Mexico Attorney General Gary King told the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee‘s subcommittee on human rights this morning.
King urged senators to help Mexico fund its judicial reform efforts, including training for investigators, prosecutors and judges on combating border crime.
King emphasized recent examples of successful cooperation between the two countries, including an agreement to share intelligence on human smuggling and drug smuggling networks, and an expansion of joint U.S./Mexican undercover operations to interdict arms trafficking from the U.S. to Mexico.
King also described efforts against money laundering and stolen vehicle trafficking.
King hosted a week-long training session this month for Mexican law enforcement officials at an undisclosed facility in southwestern New Mexico, according to spokesman Phillip Sisneros.
