PRC Commissioner Marks ‘surprised’ by interim Insurance Superintendent appointment

Public Regulation Commission (PRC) Commissioner Jason Marks of Albuquerque, who is attending a two-day renewable energy transmission conference in Arizona, was “a little surprised” Thursday afternoon to learn other commissioners had appointed Craig Dunbar as the new interim state insurance superintendent.

“I did not have anything to do with this decision,” Marks said. “I was not aware this was going to be considered today. Last week and on Tuesday, the commission discussed consideration of two well-respected former insurance superintendents. That still seems like what the PRC and Division needed.”

Former state insurance superintendents Don Letherer or Chris Krahling were both under consideration for the interim position, Marks said.

“One benefit of bringing on a former superintendent was that we’d have somebody who wasn’t conflicted out but had the background and experience to conduct the type of public hearing that the Blue Cross case needs,” Marks said. “I’m not sure where the commission goes from here.”

Marks was quick to say he did not mean to denigrate Dunbar.

“I hope he succeeds, obviously,” Marks said. “It just probably would not have been the decision I would have made.”
