President Obama will send up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the border and request an additional $500 million in supplemental funding for border security, he told Senate Republicans today.
Fox News quotes an unnamed administration official as saying the National Guard troops would “provide intelligence; surveillance and reconnaissance support; intelligence analysis; immediate support to counternarcotics enforcement; and training capacity until Customs and Border Patrol can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border.”
In 2006, George W. Bush ordered thousands of National Guard troops to help patrol the border. Earlier this year, Gov. Bill Richardson ordered National Guard troops to the border in New Mexico.
