Threats to members of Congress up 300 percent

Threats on members of Congress increased by 300 percent in the first few months of 2010, an investigation by The Politico has found. According to FBI documents, most of the suspects are men who own guns and have recently undergone stressful events. Some had been treated for mental illness; at least one admitted being drunk when he left voicemail for Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) saying:

“We’re gonna [expletive] get you…We’re gonna get you with a lot of [expletive] bolt action. Like we did RFK; like we did MLK. We know who you are. We’ll get you.”

Because of the increased threats, and subsequent increase in protection required,  the Capitol Police have requested a $2.7 million budget increase.

The office of Ben Ray Luján received a bomb threat earlier this year.
