Karl Rove campaigns for Weh via phone

Conservative Republican gubernatorial candidate Allen Weh is “tough as nails” on illegal immigration, a recorded phone message from Republican political strategist Karl Rove is telling thousands of New Mexico voters.

“Don’t be misled by negative ads,” the Albuquerque Journal Wednesday quoted Rove as saying in the recording. “Allen Weh is the right choice.”

Both Rove and Weh, a former state Republic Party chairman, were implicated in the politically-motivated firing of federal prosecutor David Iglesias.

In 2005, then-state party chair Weh expressed dissatisfaction with Iglesias to Rove, stemming from Iglesias’s supposed failure to aggressively pursue cases against democratic lawmakers in New Mexico.

A new poll Wednesday morning showed Susana Martinez developing a dramatic 11-point lead over Weh in the Republican primary race, Joe Monahan reported.
