‘Beep! Beep!’ goes the parade float

The New Mexico float for the annual Tournament of Roses parade in Los Angeles will have a distinctly cartoonish feel. The theme for the float is “Hats off to New Mexico – Beep! Beep!” and will feature the classic cartoon characters Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner.

From the Santa Fe New Mexican:

Unveiled on Thursday at The Chuck Jones Gallery, the float features an Acme Rocket-riding Wile E. Coyote chasing Jones’ iconic Road Runner down an asphalt highway traveling from the mountain scenery of Northern New Mexico to the desert of Southern New Mexico.

The roadrunner is the state bird of New Mexico, and it isn’t the only time that Chuck Jones’ cartoon creations have been used to gain attention for the state.

In January 2009, a show called “Man vs. Coyote” will air. The live action reality show, filmed at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, will answer the question, “Could the Coyote have caught the Roadrunner if he had had a REAL engineering education?”

So what exactly does the float look like?

Zooming down the roadway of old Route 66, Wile E Coyote, strapped atop an ACME rocket, is making yet another futile attempt to catch the Road Runner, just as he shifts into high gear. Fans know it is only a matter of seconds before this elaborate scheme will invariably fail with catastrophic results for the Coyote.

Their accelerating chase travels through the abstract scenery of New Mexico’s Land of Enchantment. The vast landscapes of the state are comically depicted in animation art form, from the snow-capped trees of the majestic mountains, through the teetering rock formations on down to the colorful desert floor bursting alive with blooming yuccas.

Last year the “Passport to the World and Beyond” float won the Grand Marshal’s Trophy “for excellence in creative concept and design.”
