‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal takes a step forward

The Senate Armed Services Committee today voted in favor of repealing a ban on gays and lesbians openly serving in the military. The panel voted in a closed session.

The vote was 16-12 and Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told the New York Times she was the only Republican to vote for the repeal.

Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., sits on the panel. Earlier this year, Bingaman signed onto the effort to repeal the policy from the Bill Clinton era.

The House is expected to take up the measure on the floor this week.

The White House and congressional leaders reached a compromise on the repeal earlier this week that would give the final say to the Pentagon after a review of the policy is completed on December 1.
