GOP-funded PAC gives $4k each to primary challengers of Dem incumbents

A conservative political action committee founded and run by state Republican Party leaders has given big donations to three Democratic candidates who are challenging incumbent state Representatives Eleanor Chavez, D-Albuquerque, Miguel Garcia, D-Albuquerque, and Richard Vigil, D-Ribera.

The New Mexico Turn Around political committee gave $4,000 to Chavez’ challenger, Matthew Archuleta, representing nearly half of the $9,083 he raised last reporting period.

The group also gave $4,000 to Vigil’s challenger Barbara Casey, and Miguel Garcia’s opponent Michael Atler.

The PAC’s executive director is Executive Director of the New Mexico Republican Party Ryan Cangiolosi. Harvey Yates, Jr., the chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party, sat on its board at its inception.

According to reports with the Secretary of State’s office, the political committee has raised a little more than $17,000 for this election cycle, including $8,000 from PetroYates, a company owned by the Yates family. Another $3,000 came from the Jalapeno Corporation — a company for which Cangiolosi is business manager. Another $5,000 came from Jim Bohlander, who sits on the Republican Party of Santa Fe Central Committee. The last significant contribution, $1,000, came from the Aragon Law Firm.

“I don’t understand how any Democrat can take money from the Republican Party. I’m amazed that my opponent is financing his appeal to Democratic voters with thousands of dollars from the Republican Party Chairman. What does this say about his values and the sincerity of his message?” Rep. Chavez asked in a statement released Friday.
