New Mexico is one of nearly three dozen states applying for second-round funding in the federal Race to the Top contest. The state mailed its application to Washington Saturday, Beverly Friedman, spokesperson for the New Mexico Public Education Department, told The Independent this morning.
The state had indicated all spring that it would apply despite its performance in the first round. New Mexico failed to win one of the 16 finalist spots in the first round, which was ultimately won by only two states — Delaware and Tennessee.
New Mexico is applying for $75 million in the second round. Winners will be announced later this year.
One of the large challenges for New Mexico was crafting an application that might catch federal vetters’ eyes.
New Mexico’s public education secretary Veronica Garcia and her staff spent most of the spring leading up to today negotiating with teacher unions. The issue before the state and the unions was how to find a way to measure teachers’ performance that both the administration and teachers’ unions could live with.
