Ray Powell is Dem candidate for Land Commissioner

With a 9.7 percent lead over Santa Fe Commissioner Harry Montoya, Ray B. Powell will be the Democratic candidate for state land commissioner. He is a veteran of the office, having served as land commissioner from 1994 to 2002.

As of 10:55 p.m., unofficial results from the Secretary of State’s office said Powell had received 40.9 percent of the primary vote, to Montoya’s 34.7 percent. Outgoing PRC Commissioner Sandy Jones came in a distant third, with just 24.4 percent of votes.

Santa Fe County Commissioner Mike Anaya dropped out earlier in the primary race to endorce Powell.

The Land Office leases state trust land for oil and gas drilling, mining, and grazing, as well as commercial development.
