Albuquerque Teachers Federation President Ellen Bernstein prefers Sen. Barack Obama’s education platform over Sen. John McCain’s, but she would like her candidate to make a case for throwing No Child Left Behind  out instead of trying to fix it.

“Mr. Obama still thinks we can fund it and fix it,” Bernstein said. “I think Obama should come out strongly and say, ‘Get rid of it. It’s another failed Bush policy and we can do better.’ ” Locally, Bernstein said she hopes Senate hopeful Tom Udall and CD1 hopeful Martin Heinrich will be more forceful in their approach to NCLB. Udall, running against Steve Pearce for the U.S. Senate, and former City Councilor Heinrich, who is facing Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White in CD1, have both been endorsed by the ATF.
