Denish supports Real ID Act; opposes driver’s licenses for undocumented immigrants

Democratic gubernatorial candidate, and current Lt. Gov. Diane Denish said in a new conference that she supports the controversial REAL ID Act and that she opposes giving driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants. Denish said this at a press conference, her first of the general election.

Denish said the law that allows undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses was well-intentioned but not useful.

“But we have found that there are scam artists and there are con men that are fraudulently manufacturing documents, that are coming here to get driver’s licenses,” Denish said, according to the Albuquerque Journal. “So I think we need to tighten that up. We need to comply with the Real ID Act, and make sure that we have that comprehensive approach across the country.”

As for the REAL ID Act, some question if it will ever be enacted. States were given yet another extension to implement the REAL ID Act. This, the second such extension, gives states until May 10, 2011 to comply with the federal law.
