GOP candidate pledges money to help pay for recount of Speaker Lujan’s race

Republican candidate Bob Walsh announced Thursday that he had pledged $20 to help Democrat Carl Trujillo pay for a recount in his race against House Speaker Ben Lujan, D-Santa Fe.

Walsh, who is running against Rep. Luciano “Lucky” Varela, D-Santa Fe, in November, called on other candidates to add their support to the recount in the House District 46 race “in the interest of greater public confidence in election results,” a news release from Walsh’s campaign said.

Trujillo has said he would ask for a recount if all ballots are counted and he is still behind.

Under state law, a candidate in any federal race and certain state races, including legislative contests, can request and receive an automatic, taxpayer-funded recount when he or she is within one-half of 1 percent of the winner. A candidate who is behind by a larger gap can ask for a recount, but risks having to pay the entire cost if he or she loses the race.

Currently Trujillo is 80 votes shy of Lujan, above the one-half of 1 percent threshold needed to qualify for a taxpayer-funded recount.

Walsh pledged $200 to help defray the assessed costs in case the recount does not overturn the result.
