This week we’ve asked our Independent Forum panelists who they think are the winners and losers in the 2010 primary. Panelist Martha Burk said based on the two women at the top of the ticket, the primary season was a winner for women. Here’s more perspective on that: Several down-ballot candidates involved with a political training program for Democratic women also won their races this week. Stephanie Richard, who did the training program in 2008, won her primary for the NM House of Representatives District 43 and will challenge state Rep. Jeanette Wallace (R). One of the group’s founding board members, Judge Shannon Bacon, won retention to her seat as a district court judge. Two other candidates, Loretta Naranjo Lopez (Bernalillo County Commission District 1) and Marie “Sisi” Miranda (Bernalillo County Sheriff ) didn’t win but ran very competitive races.
Several other Emerge graduates are running in races that will be decided this fall. Cornelia “Nili” Wells Lange, Emerge NM Class of 2009, is running for the state House in District 28. Rep. Karen Giannini, Emerge NM Class of 2007, is fighting to save her house seat in District 30. Willow Misty Parks, Emerge NM Class of 2010, is a candidate for Bernalillo County Probate Judge. And Judge Beatrice Brickhouse, Emerge NM Class of 2010, is running unopposed for retention in the 2nd Judicial District, Division 4.
