Two candidates endorsed by The Victory Fund, an organization that trains and funds gay and lesbian candidates, won their races this week. Judge Linda Vanzi won her Democratic primary for a seat on the Court of Appeals; because she has no opposition in November, she was effectively elected Tuesday. Shannon Bacon also won her race for the District Court in Bernalillo County and faces no opposition in November.
Pat Davis lost his bid to become the nation’s first openly gay man to serve as sheriff. Despite a whispering campaign against Vanzi (we heard) and active campaigning for the candidates by some gay and lesbian advocates, the candidates’ sexual orientation was largely under the radar during this election.
