Education Secretary Veronica C. García has decided not to create a new school district on the city’s west side. Secretary García said she made the decision based on opposition from the community, difficult economic conditions and legal constraints.
Garcia said in a press release that supporters of the idea can ask the propose a resolution to the APS Board or collect petition signatures from 60 percent of the registered voters in that community, and then have a public hearing.
Further, Garcia made legislative suggestions, saying “The law does not match our current governance structure, requiring a hearing solely on my own recommendation and decision. Moreover, the 60% signature threshold is higher than what is required for a regular election and lawmakers may want to consider lowering the threshold. Additionally, there is no provision for an election to take place on this type of issue.”
She recommended that the school board and superintendent be more responsive to parents and students on the west side.
