Mora County undersheriff Tim Marquez found himself without a job after Mora County Sheriff Roy Cordova fired him via text message in April. His offense? Apparently opposing Cordova in the Democratic primary for Mora County Sheriff.

Tuesday, however, both fell short in their election bid. Thomas Garcia won the four-way Democratic primary according to unofficial numbers from the Secretary of State’s office.

According to the Secretary of State, Thomas Garza won the race with 32 percent of the vote. Incumbent sheriff Cordova received 29.6 percent of the vote and Marquez came in a distant fourth with 15.9 percent of the vote. Greg Martin Laumbach came in fourth 22.6 percent of the vote.

In all, there were 1843 votes cast in the race.

Garza will face Republican Robert Romero in the general election in November. Romero had no opposition in the Republican primary.
