The race between Republican candidate Susana Martinez and Democratic candidate Diane Denish “remains in a virtual tie” according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports.
The poll shows that Martinez, the Doña Ana County District Attorney, leads Denish 44 percent to 42 percent among likely voters, well within the poll’s 4.5 percent margin of error.
Martinez prevailed in a five-way Republican primary on Tuesday with more than 50 percent of the vote. Denish, the current Lt. Gov., only had a write-in candidate opposing her in the Democratic primary.
Of those polled, 55 percent had a favorable view of Martinez and 51 percent of Denish.
In immigration, 65 percent said the U.S. military should be sent to the Mexican border “to prevent illegal immigration.” And just 37 percent believe that the U.S. Justice Department should challenge the legality of the recent controversial Arizona immigration law designed to force illegal immigrants out of the state.
The poll found that 52 percent of New Mexicans approve of the job President Barack Obama is doing, with 35 percent strongly approving, and 48 percent disapproving, with 39 percent strongly disapproving.
Those polled say that governor Bill Richardson, who is term-limited and cannot run for re-election, has a 43 percent approval rating while 57 percent disapprove of the job he is doing.
As for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 47 percent believe it will have a devastating impact on the environment in the long-term while just 5 percent said it would have a minor or little impact on the environment. Another 32 percent say it will have a “major” impact on the environment. And of those polled, 74 percent believe the companies who were drilling for the oil should pay for the cleanup.
Rasmussen polled 500 likely voters in New Mexico on June 3, 2010. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points.
